Jaws was made in a different era of film-making, where it wasn't just a matter of computer editing to make everything look exactly how you wanted it. They needed multiple sharks and shark models to generate the scenes they wanted.
That's like comparing the Lunar Modules of the Apollo space flight program to modern day Space Shuttles. They have only the slightest comparability.

So, I was going through the movie AGAIN, to check more stuff, and found something I had overlooked last time. Irrefutable proof that there's more than one monster:
Yep, the monster that attacks Hud, has claws. Therefore, it CANNOT be the same one that is in the rest of the movie. Now to solve the other 100000 clues....

Throughout the movie i was wondering how the monster managed to pass through the city and decapitate the Statue of Libertys head at the same time.
Also i read where one of the makers of the film reffered to it as "just a baby" that crawled out of the sea confused (leading to its rampage). Looking forward to the sequel.
Did anyone stay through the credits for the whisper? (Sounded like "......still alive" couldnt catch if it was "We're still alive" or "Its still alive")

End of the credits, it says "It's still alive". So as far as I know, it's talking about the one that was nearest to Rob and Beth at the end, so the 2nd smaller one with claws. Or maybe it's just talking about the huge one that they threw an air strike on...

Wasn't it some inaudible jabbering until someone played it backwards which sounds like "It's still alive."? Or did my friend deceive me with his YTMND he presented to me.
Edit: He should me this one http://cloverfieldmessage.ytmnd.com/

First off, for anyone who becomes more interested in this great film thanks to this thread: awesome. For a few fleeting moments I was worried, when I first saw it, that I was just missing something, and that a quick search on the internet would answer all of my questions. Had this been true, I'm pretty sure the movie would've been pretty quickly forgotten... instead, I found a veritable candy store of possible theories, and no one telling you which candy to buy.
As Fenix posted, he has found even more hard to argue with proof of the multiple monster theory. The Hud-eater has single claw-like things on the end of it's front arms, while the airstrike monster has fingery things on the end of it's arms... a clear shot of which can be seen in either the scene from the helicopter where it's being airstruck, or earlier where the soldiers are battling it just outside the subway entrance. (I finally convinced Fenix that those two were the same guy =] ).

Actually yes, you're right. It's not really anything until you play it backwards, though for some time people were thinking that it said "Help us." Once it's played backwards, though, it very clearly says "It's still alive."
That YTMND shows very accurately (and rather dramatically) exactly what I'm talking about.

I thought I'd just add that the whale-like concept art isn't official. It's actually done by one of the Guild Wars' concept artists (he designed some of the destroyers, I think), for a fanart competition.
This 'ere seems to be official, and is a better depiction of the monster.

I have two theories about this one. Firstly, that it is the monster from the airstrike scene, but standing up. We have found that if it crouches down, it can flatten itself to the ground and seem quite small, but standing up on its front legs, it is MUCH larger (eg, when it destroys the helicopter). When it is first shown walking through the buildings you can tell just how large it is when it stands up, so throughout the film it changes size a lot, simply from the way it stands.
Although, it seems to have a different shape to the airstrike one, so it might either be the one that tore off the head of the Statue of Liberty, or another one all together. Sha put forward the idea that there could be one that is a similar shape to a dinosaur (namely a tyrannosaurus rex), which I think is very possible, if you look at that picture and at the shots on the news.

Also a fanart picture, but it is one of the closest to what the airstrike monster seems to be. The back legs I'm not sure about, but the front half is pretty much perfect. Note the distinct lack of claws

I believe that the monster we see in the picture posted by Papi is the same one we see pictured on the news, the one that we can visibly see dropping the parasites.

Yeah, I've seen those pics. From what I can tell, the large majority of people are sticking with the idea that there is one monster, simply because they haven't looked at it thoroughly enough. There is too much evidence hinting that there is more than one for it to just be the same monster all the way through.

Uhm, yeah there are actually more than one monster originally gonna be put in the film but they were rejected, but they say they would be revamped and be put in the sequel, *not final*^^.

I guess if they plan on the 2nd movie having more than one movie, they must be hinting at it in Cloverfield. Makes sense, it's just strange that people STILL think (after how many months of being able to watch it?) that there's only one...

I think that the problem stems from two of the major scenes that include a larger monster centering around the same one (that is, the Army battling the one outside the subway, which is the same one that is later airstruck). These are two of the clearest views of a monster, and so it would be easy to ignore small details and just assume that all the rest of the monster glimpses are shitty views of this monster.... however that's simply wrong. This monster's tail could not have destroyed the bridge, and as it has a knuckled, multi-fingered hand-ish thing on the end of it's front arms it could not be the same one that eats Hud. Easy as that. =]

the number of teeth is also a clear sign that there are at least two different monsters
the monster who gets attacked by the military has a very small number of teeth while the one that kills hud has a mouth full of very close together teeth
